A pilot reported losing power in the right engine at rotation, continued takeoff due to insufficient runway, and later ditched in a lake when unable to maintain altitude. No pre-impact malfunction was found.

Incident Details

According to the pilot, the right engine lost power at or shortly after rotation for takeoff. The pilot reported that there was insufficient room to stop on the runway, with a house near the end, and therefore opted to continue the takeoff and fly to a safe landing area. The pilot stated that he feathered the right propeller and raised the landing gear, but was unable to climb or maintain airspeed. The speed deteriorated to Vmc (minimum control speed with one engine inoperative) or below, requiring a descent to just above the water level of a lake. During this time, the left engine power was reduced to prevent a roll to the right.

The aircraft continued across the lake for about 1 mile. As the far shore and higher terrain approached, the pilot ditched the aircraft. Approximately 5 minutes later, the aircraft sank in about 85 feet of water.

Recovery and Investigation

The aircraft was recovered. After cleaning and installing a new starter vibrator, the right engine was started and operated to the rated RPM. The investigation verified no pre-impact malfunction of the right engine.
