Incident Overview
A pilot reported that after taking off at 1348 CST, the weather conditions included a 400-foot overcast ceiling and visibility of 2 to 5 miles with rain. Approximately 10 minutes later, the pilot arrived at the Port O'Connor jetty and could see across Matagorda Bay to Port O'Connor.
Encounter with Severe Weather
About halfway across the bay, the helicopter encountered severe turbulence and rain, which were associated with a thunderstorm. In response, the pilot executed a 180-degree turn and attempted to proceed to a beach for landing.
Loss of Control During Approach
While on a landing approach at approximately 100 feet above ground level, the helicopter encountered a severe downdraft. The pilot applied full power, but the descent continued, and the helicopter impacted the water in a near-level attitude.
