Accident Details
According to the pilot's report, the engine lost power while the aircraft was climbing through approximately 75 to 100 feet above ground level. The pilot maneuvered the aircraft straight ahead with the intention of landing beyond a highway. Transmission lines were present on both sides of the roadway. Believing he had insufficient airspeed and altitude to safely fly over the lines, the pilot continued. The tail of the aircraft contacted a telephone line while crossing under the first set of wires. Subsequently, the right wing struck the ground, causing the aircraft to cartwheel across the highway before coming to rest in a ditch on the opposite side of the road.
As the occupants exited the aircraft, a small fire developed in the vicinity of the engine. Within a short time, the aircraft was destroyed by fire.
Investigation Findings
An investigation revealed that the fuel selector was positioned to both tanks. Water was found in the right tank and in a fuel line leading from the right tank. Rust was discovered on the inside tangs of the right fuel cap, in the threads of the right quick drain, and in the carburetor. No other preimpact problems were evident.
