Incident Summary
An aircraft sustained substantial damage after landing with its landing gear retracted. The pilot reported that a total electrical failure occurred while en route. Upon arrival, when the pilot selected the landing gear down, it did not extend normally. The pilot then attempted to use the emergency gear extension system but misidentified the operation of the emergency gear-down switch, pushing it upward instead of downward.
During the approach, the pilot stated that he flew with high power and only one notch of flaps. The aircraft's automatic gear extension system was designed to deploy the landing gear under certain conditions, but the combination of high power and limited flap setting precluded that system from functioning.
The aircraft landed gear-up, resulting in substantial damage. No injuries were reported among the occupants.
Investigation Findings
An investigation was conducted following the incident. Examination of the electrical system revealed a broken alternator output wire at the connection point to a terminal lug. The broken wire was determined to be the cause of the total electrical failure experienced during the flight.
