Overview

The pilot of the aircraft declared an emergency following a loss of engine power. The aircraft subsequently crashed into a reservoir.

Engine Examination

Post-accident examination of the engine disclosed numerous pieces of the induction air filter throughout the engine. Specifically, filter paper was found lodged between the intake valve and valve seat of the number 5 cylinder. The throat of the carburetor venturi was almost completely blocked by pieces of the filter paper. Paper fragments were also observed dropping from the number 4 cylinder intake port, and several paper fragments were found in the oil sump.

Filter Condition

Little of the paper element remained inside the air filter frame. The paper that did remain was markedly discolored. The filter had accumulated approximately 1,100 hours of service since its installation nearly 10 years prior. Cessna recommends that the filter be replaced every 500 hours of operation.
