Accident Details
A light aircraft collided with the top two wires of a powerline during a low-altitude sightseeing flight along the Potomac River. One wire contacted the landing gear, causing the aircraft to pitch down out of control and crash on a rocky ledge on an island in the river. The free end of one of the wires recoiled onto Interstate 70 (I-70) and struck two cars, resulting in minor injuries to two persons.
Pilot Statement
The pilot stated that he was maintaining visual contact with the ground to ensure an emergency landing could be made if necessary. He reported staying high enough to clear trees. According to the pilot, the terrain apparently became higher without his awareness, and the wires became visible just before the collision.
Aftermath
After the crash, the aircraft came to rest on the island. The powerline wire that struck the cars caused minor injuries to two individuals on the highway.
