What happened
The aircraft experienced a sudden power failure while conducting a slow descent to enter the traffic pattern after completing a brief test hop. Despite the loss of engine power, the pilot managed to accomplish a landing in an open field covered with snow.
During the roll-out phase, the aircraft encountered approximately 18 inches of deep snow. The resistance from the snow caused the nose gear to collapse, resulting in the aircraft nosing over.
The investigation
A preliminary examination of the engine and fuel systems was conducted to determine the cause of the power failure. Inspections of the air filter, fuel pressure lines, and engine rotation showed no obvious mechanical faults. Fuel was confirmed present in the carburetor.
Fuel quantity checks indicated that 20 gallons remained in the left tank and 10 gallons were present in the right tank at the time of the incident.
