What happened
The pilot was attempting to initiate a takeoff roll from Yucca Valley Airport when the aircraft suddenly became uncontrollable. During this phase of flight, the pilot encountered a dust devil, which caused the airplane to swerve violently off the paved surface. The aircraft entered an adjacent wash and flipped over onto its back.
The investigation
Post-accident examination confirmed that the aircraft sustained significant damage from the rollover. The pilot reported that the loss of control was directly attributed to the encounter with the dust devil. No mechanical failures or pre-existing defects were identified as contributing factors to the incident.
Findings
The weather conditions at the time of the accident were visual meteorological conditions (VMC). The temperature was in the 60s Fahrenheit, and winds were light, blowing from the east at 3 to 5 knots. Despite the generally favorable weather, the localized atmospheric disturbance known as a dust devil proved sufficient to render the aircraft uncontrollable during the critical takeoff phase.
Safety message
Pilots operating in arid or desert environments should remain vigilant for signs of thermal activity that may produce dust devils. These phenomena can create sudden and severe turbulence, particularly during low-altitude operations such as takeoff and landing, where aircraft have minimal altitude to recover from unexpected control inputs.
