A pilot landed on Runway 13 instead of 31 due to a claimed NOTAM, but no such NOTAM existed. During the landing roll, the pilot initiated a go-around, but the aircraft veered off the runway, hit a fence and railroad track, and flipped over.

Accident Sequence

The accident occurred during an attempted go-around. The pilot had landed downwind with an approach speed of 80 knots and flaps set to 25 degrees. According to the pilot, he used Runway 13 instead of Runway 31 because a NOTAM prohibited landing on Runway 31. However, investigation revealed no NOTAM prohibiting landing on Runway 31, nor was there a NOTAM prohibiting takeoffs on Runway 13.

During the landing roll, the pilot realized he was too far down the runway and moving too fast. He then initiated a go-around. A witness observed the aircraft approximately 1,000 feet from the departure end of the runway, moving at a high rate of speed. The witness reported that the aircraft went off the right side of the runway about 300 to 400 feet from the end of Runway 13.

At that point, the aircraft's nose gear was off the ground, but the main gear remained in contact with the surface. The witness stated, "The pilot then pushed the throttle in as if to make a go-around." The aircraft subsequently went through a fence, struck a railroad track, and flipped over.
