While taxiing, the pilot noticed a loose fuel cap, set the parking brake, and exited the running aircraft to secure it. The aircraft moved, struck a parked Commander 690C. Incident Details
A pilot preparing to taxi discovered a loose fuel cap on the left wing of the aircraft. After setting the parking brake, the pilot exited the cockpit while both engines were still operating. The pilot placed a chock on the right wheel and was securing the fuel cap when the aircraft began to move. The pilot attempted to hold the aircraft by the wing, but it continued turning and collided with a parked Commander 690C, registration N155WP.
Prior to leaving the cockpit, the pilot had asked a front-seat passenger to hold the brakes in case the aircraft moved. The passenger was familiar with the brakes but was unable to stop the aircraft.
Findings
Post-accident examination disclosed that the parking brake valve did not hold pressure and the left brake linings were at minimum thickness. No other factors were identified in the investigation.
