Incident Overview
A flight that departed Belfast at 1100 encountered a fuel gauge issue after passing Reading. The pilot observed the right tank gauge rise from half to full. Approximately three miles from Reading, the flight executed a 180-degree turn to return to the airport.
Engine Surge and Communication
About one mile from the airport, the engine surged. The pilot contacted the tower, declaring low fuel and requesting an emergency landing, but the response was unintelligible.
Runway Incursion
On the downwind end of the runway, the pilot observed an aircraft taking off and a large aircraft subsequently pulling onto the runway. The pilot made a turn to allow the aircraft to clear the runway.
Landing and Outcome
By this time, the pilot had no remaining power and decided to land alongside the runway. The aircraft stalled approximately four feet above the ground, causing the nose gear to collapse upon touchdown.
