Incident Overview
An aircraft crashed in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) after the pilot failed to complete a VOR approach to Jonesboro. According to the aircraft owner, the pilot was instrument rated and had filed an IFR flight plan but was not very proficient in instrument flying.
Flight Details
During the flight, the pilot deviated from the assigned course and altitude, requiring corrections from air traffic control. Communication errors were noted: the pilot misidentified Nashville Tower as Knoxville Tower and Memphis ARTCC as Atlanta. The pilot declared a missed approach two minutes after receiving final clearance at 2,400 feet. The controller on duty stated that they did not believe an approach could be made from 2,400 feet in two minutes and did not hear the aircraft pass over the airport.
Final Approach and Crash
The pilot requested a second approach, after which no further transmissions were received. The aircraft crashed in a 90-degree left bank into a wheat field approximately six miles from the airport.
