Accident Details

A helicopter pilot began an approach to an offshore oil rig under variable winds of 2 to 4 knots. The pilot chose to terminate the landing from a 4-foot hover. At approximately 15 feet above and 5 feet short of the helipad, the helicopter began to drop at an accelerated rate. The pilot applied collective control, but the aircraft continued to descend through the air cushion and the pilot was unable to arrest the fall.

The helicopter initially impacted the flat safety net short of the helipad. After impact, it rotated 180 degrees and bounced onto the helipad.
