Background
The flight was conducted to transport a technician and his equipment to a mountain top for servicing a microwave antenna site. Upon arrival, cloud coverage prevented a landing at the intended site. The pilot was able to land in a clearing on the eastern ridge line, approximately 100 yards below the site. The passenger deplaned, and the pilot stated that if the weather improved, he would fly up to the site.
Accident Sequence
As the passenger arrived at the site, he heard the helicopter start its engine and proceed to fly toward his position. The helicopter hovered for a short time and then began descending toward the southwest into a cloud cover. About 20 seconds later, the passenger heard the crash. He located the crash site through the dense cloud cover by smelling the burning wreckage.
Investigation
The aircraft was not equipped with a gyro horizon or instrumented for instrument flight rules (IFR) operations. No further details regarding the cause or contributing factors were provided in the source.
