Flight Plan and Diversion
The pilot filed an IFR flight plan to Youngstown, Ohio, with a planned cruise altitude of 9,000 feet. After passing Appleton, Ohio, he changed his destination to Akron Municipal Airport. During the approach, icing conditions were encountered.
Icing Encounter
The pilot reported that ice accumulation on his windshield restricted forward visibility. He was unable to maintain an assigned altitude of 4,000 feet. He diverted toward Akron-Canton Regional Airport and was assisted by a surveillance radar controller. The pilot was able to stabilize his altitude at about 1,200 feet above ground level and proceeded to land.
Landing and Damage
Personnel in the control tower reported that after crossing the threshold, the aircraft suddenly entered a descent and landed hard. During the landing, the aircraft bounced, causing damage to the landing gear and airframe.
Pilot Actions
The pilot stated that he did not request any en route briefings during the 5-hour flight.
