Incident Overview

A single-engine aircraft arrived after dark at a destination airport that was unlighted and closed from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise. Prior to the flight, the pilot had arranged for an individual to drive the pilot's car to the destination airport and park it at the approach end of runway 06 with the headlights turned on to provide illumination.

Witness Observations

A witness who brought the car to the airport reported that the pilot made several low approaches to runway 06, each time executing a go-around. The witness noted that the southwest wind was "rocking the plane around quite a bit," that the aircraft was not lined up very well, and that there was a strong crosswind component from the quartering tailwind.

Accident Sequence

After approximately the seventh approach, the aircraft drifted to the right of the runway and lost altitude during the go-around. The aircraft then struck a power line, crashed, and burned.
