Accident Overview
A recently purchased aircraft was being flown to its new home by the owner's uncle, an reportedly experienced pilot. During the flight, the engine lost power shortly after the pilot leveled off at 4,000 feet MSL (approximately 3,000 feet AGL). No suitable landing area was available, so the pilot stalled the aircraft into the tops of trees.
Engine Examination
An examination of the engine revealed that the fuel pump was completely filled with water. Spring-loaded valves in the fuel pump effectively trapped the water inside the pump after the engine stopped running.
Aircraft and Pilot Information
Further investigation disclosed that the aircraft was overdue for its annual inspection and that no ferry permit had been issued for the flight. The pilot, though reportedly having flown for many years, did not possess an FAA pilot or medical certificate. The new owner was a student pilot.
