Accident Sequence
The aircraft struck a stationary fuel trailer after the engine unexpectedly started. The pilot had been turning the propeller by hand to loosen the engine oil when the engine ignited. The aircraft then moved and hit the trailer, causing a three-foot gash and spilling 860 gallons of jet fuel over the aircraft.
Pilot Actions
The pilot reported that he attempted to start the aircraft in the normal manner but the battery lacked sufficient charge to rotate the propeller. He then exited the aircraft to hand-prop the engine. The pilot stated he did not recall the positions of the throttle and mixture controls at the time of the accident. The magnetos were confirmed to be in the on position.
Injuries and Damage
As the pilot tried to re-enter the cockpit, he was struck by the left horizontal stabilizer and sustained serious injuries. The three passengers inside the aircraft escaped with minor or no injuries. Despite a large amount of fuel spilled, no fire occurred.
