Incident Overview
During a familiarization flight at an uncontrolled airport, an instructor was providing flight procedure training to a passenger who was building an ultralight aircraft. The instructor assessed the winds as light from 160 degrees. He made three calls on the UNICOM frequency but received no reply, so he decided to land on Runway 19.
Near Midair and Go-Around
While on short final, the instructor observed another aircraft landing from the opposite direction. He initiated a go-around and began a turn to avoid a collision. The instructor reported encountering turbulence, which made further stabilized flight impossible.
Forced Landing
Subsequently, the instructor landed in a plowed field to avoid flying into trees. During the landing, at the last moment, the right wing dipped and struck the ground.
