After a jump start due to battery failure, a pilot experienced total electrical failure during letdown. The aircraft had accumulated ice and landed short of the runway on the second attempt.

Background

The pilot received a jump start because the battery failed to start the engines. After departure and leveling off at 10,000 feet, the pilot was concerned with the 1 inch of rime ice that had accumulated on the aircraft. He obtained an updated weather briefing from Flight Watch and requested a clearance back to Arapahoe Airport, which was granted.

Flight and Electrical Failure

During the letdown, a total electrical failure occurred. After breaking out of the overcast, the pilot located Columbine Airport. While flying in and out of clouds, the aircraft landed short of the runway during the second landing attempt. Approximately 1-1/2 inches of ice had accumulated on the aircraft.

Battery Examination

Examination of the battery revealed that it had been exposed to very high operating temperatures. All six cells were dry. The top of the battery bore evidence of paint bubbling and case distortion.
