Accident Overview
A pilot flying a single-engine airplane experienced a loss of engine power approximately 3 miles from the airport. The pilot had just switched the fuel selector from the right to the left fuel tank. He then moved the boost pump to the high position but was unable to restart the engine. The pilot estimated that there were 5 to 7 gallons of fuel in the right main tank and about 12 gallons in the left tank at the time.
Forced Landing and Nose-Over
The pilot executed an emergency landing in a plowed field. During the landing, the aircraft nosed over, resulting in damage to the airframe. The extent of injuries, if any, was not specified.
Recovery and Fuel Inspection
The person who recovered the aircraft reported that no fuel was found in either tank. Additionally, no strong fuel odor was detected, and no fuel stains or other indications of spilled fuel were observed around the aircraft.
