Flight Details
The pilot landed at Montague Airport intending to refuel, but fuel was unavailable. The flight then proceeded to Rohrer Field, where 18 gallons of fuel were loaded onto the aircraft, a Cessna 170B.
Takeoff and Obstacle Encounter
During takeoff from Rohrer Field, the pilot used approximately two-thirds of the 3,360-foot runway before lifting off. The density altitude was approximately 4,200 feet. After becoming airborne, the pilot observed high power lines beyond the end of the runway. To obtain additional lift, the pilot extended the flaps to the full 40-degree position.
Accident Sequence
Upon realizing that the aircraft would not clear the 120-foot-high power lines, the pilot elected to fly under them. While maneuvering, the pilot then observed a lower transmission line and initiated a shallow left turn. Subsequently, the aircraft settled to the ground, collided with a fence, and came to rest.
