Accident Overview
The aircraft departed the runway during landing, continued through a fence and bushes, and nosed over. The incident occurred after the pilot performed a go-around on the first approach due to excessive airspeed.
Flight Details
The pilot reported that the windsock appeared limp at the time of the accident. However, weather observations from Cedar City Flight Service Station, located 17 miles north-northeast of the accident site, indicated winds from 130 degrees at 12 knots. The second approach was conducted at an airspeed of 70 to 80 miles per hour with 20 degrees of flaps deployed. The pilot stated that the aircraft touched down farther along the runway than usual. The aircraft then bounced and floated before settling to the ground. Despite applying hard braking, the pilot was unable to stop the aircraft on the runway.
Witness Statement
The pilot's son, who was standing by the runway, observed that the aircraft passed by at a faster speed than normal before it collided with the fence.
Environmental Conditions
The density altitude at the time of the accident was calculated to be 7,298 feet.
