An aircraft made a forced landing and struck a pine tree after taking off with a tow bar still attached to the nose gear, following a preflight oil measurement procedure.

Preflight Inspection and Departure

The pilot reported attaching a tow bar to the aircraft's nose gear to level the aircraft for measuring engine oil quantity. After completing the preflight inspection, the pilot taxied out and departed. At the airport, all departures are conducted on runway 21 and all landings on runway 3, a procedure with which the pilot was familiar.

In-Flight Notification and Attempted Landing

After takeoff, the pilot was informed by radio that a tow bar was still attached to the nose gear and was trailing. Following a flyby, the pilot attempted to land on runway 21. On final approach, the pilot feathered the front engine to prevent damage during landing. The pilot was then informed by radio that he was landing downwind.

Go-Around and Engine Restart Attempt

The pilot attempted a go-around and restart the engine. With the landing gear extended, the aircraft failed to climb. As the pilot tried to restart the engine and align with runway 3, altitude and airspeed were lost. Approaching a stall, the pilot decided to land in an adjacent rough field.

Forced Landing and Collision

The aircraft stopped after impacting a pine tree. Density altitude at the time was 7,580 feet. The aircraft was within 200 pounds of its gross weight.
