Narrative
Prior to the flight to Wichita, the pilot completed a local night checkout with a certified flight instructor at Olathe. The flight departed Olathe at 2030. While descending for landing at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport, the engine stopped. The pilot received a vector to Col. James Jabara Airport. When it became apparent that the aircraft would not reach runway 2, the pilot selected a road for the forced landing. As he attempted to land between motor vehicles, the aircraft stalled and landed hard on the road.
Fuel System Examination
After the incident, the left fuel tank was found empty and showed no evidence of leakage. The right tank had ruptured and was leaking fuel. The pilot had selected the left fuel tank when the engine was initially started and used it continuously throughout the flights.
Pilot Statement
The pilot stated that he did not attempt to restart the engine after it quit.
