Accident Sequence
Two rated pilots occupied an aircraft that was observed performing maneuvers described as stalls. An airline pilot characterized these stalls as violent. As the nose of the aircraft came through the horizon, it reportedly dropped more than 45 degrees and entered a rapid left bank. A separate witness reported seeing the aircraft enter a three-turn spin. During the pilot's recovery attempt, the witness heard a 'pop' and observed something trailing from the aircraft. Additionally, the witness heard the engine accelerate during the event. The aircraft subsequently crashed.
Post-Crash Examination
An examination of the crash area revealed that the aircraft had broken up in flight. Major components that separated included a 6-foot outboard section of the left wing, the right aileron, and the right door. All separated metal structures displayed indications of bending, tearing, and overload failure.
Pilot Background
The pilot in the right front seat had applied for membership with the organization that owned the aircraft. The source indicates that this pilot may have been receiving informal instruction in the operation of the aircraft. Both occupants were rated pilots.
