Incident
After entering the landing pattern, the pilot noted binding of the aileron control system. The aileron controls reportedly seemed to lock, prompting the pilot to use rudders for directional control. The aircraft subsequently landed in a plowed field. During the landing roll, the aircraft nosed over.
Examination
An examination of the aircraft revealed that the Piper auto control system, specifically the wing leveler, had become engaged. With the wing leveler engaged, an extraordinary amount of control force was required to overcome a gear system.
Pilot's Observation
The pilot believed that the wing leveler control, part number 751-519, vibrated into the engaged position.
