An aircraft lost control while landing in gusty crosswind conditions, drifted off the runway, attempted a go-around, and collided with a hangar before nosing over. The pilot used full flaps, contrary to handbook recommendations for crosswind landings.

Accident Overview

During a landing attempt, an aircraft lost control and subsequently collided with a hangar, nosing over. The wind was reported from 330 degrees at 20 knots with gusts to 35 knots. Runway 03 was in use.

Sequence of Events

The pilot configured the aircraft with full flaps and flared to an airspeed of 60 knots. As the aircraft began to drift off the runway with wings level, the pilot reportedly added power. When the drift continued, power was increased to full throttle. While attempting to regain the runway, a gust of wind rolled the aircraft into a 20-degree right bank. At that point, the aircraft was halfway down the runway, and a go-around was initiated. The flaps were raised to half. Shortly thereafter, a part of the aircraft struck a post near a taxiway. Then, the main landing gear contacted the roof of a 15-foot-high aircraft. Control was lost, and the aircraft pitched down into the ground.

Pilot Remarks and Handbook Guidance

The pilot later stated that he believed the recommended crosswind landing procedure called for full flaps. However, the aircraft's handbook indicated that minimum flaps or a flaps-up approach speed of 80 KIAS should be used, field length permitting.
