What happened
The incident occurred during the arrival phase of a dual instructional flight. As the aircraft approached the airport, the Unicom station provided advisories indicating that an ultralight aircraft was overhead and potentially attempting to land in the vicinity. A second advisory regarding the ultralight was received while the student pilot was on final approach.
The instructor pilot later stated that he became preoccupied with searching for the ultralight aircraft. This distraction caused him to allow the student to touch down approximately 1,000 feet down the runway with excessive speed. It was reported that the instructor delayed taking action to execute a go-around during this critical phase. Upon realizing the situation, he took control of the aircraft and applied maximum braking. Despite these efforts, the aircraft continued past the end of the runway, struck a rock pile, and entered a ditch. The instructor reported a right crosswind component of 5 knots at the time of the event.
Findings
The primary factor contributing to this accident was the instructor pilot's loss of situational awareness regarding the landing aircraft due to distraction by another aircraft in the traffic pattern. This led to a delayed decision to go around and an excessive touchdown speed, which resulted in the inability to stop on the remaining runway length.
