Incident Overview
A cross-country flight encountered adverse weather, prompting a course change that brought the aircraft near Lovelock, Nevada. Fuel was marginal for completing the flight, so the pilot decided to land at Lovelock for fuel.
Approach and Wind Information
As the flight neared Lovelock, the pilot could not contact the flight service station (FSS) for wind information. The pilot did, however, communicate with another aircraft departing the airport, which reported winds as straight down runway 01. The wind sock also drifted off the right side of the runway and nosed down.
Post-Landing Observations
After the accident, the pilot noticed the wind sock oscillate to a 90-degree crosswind. According to Cessna, the factory demonstrated crosswind component of this aircraft is 20 knots for takeoff and landing.
Additional Details
The FSS at Lovelock was closed at the time.
