Event Description
An aircraft experienced an excursion from the runway during a landing attempt on runway 13. After bouncing on touchdown, the aircraft swerved to the right and departed the paved surface. The main landing gear struck a drainage ditch located 60 feet from the runway edge. The aircraft subsequently groundlooped and came to a stop.
Pilot's Account
The pilot reported receiving clearance to land on runway 13. The winds were from 290 degrees at 4 knots. During the flare for a two-point landing, the pilot stated that a gust of wind, which had not been noted in any weather reports, struck the aircraft, causing it to balloon back into the air. Upon descent, the aircraft veered to the right. The pilot applied power to initiate a go-around, but the aircraft continued off the runway.
Aftermath
After the aircraft came to a stop, the pilot noted that the air traffic control tower changed the active runway to 31. No information was provided regarding the aircraft type, registration, occupants, or injuries.
