Incident Details
During a dual instructional flight, a student pilot—who held ratings for single-engine, multiengine, and land planes but not a helicopter rating—was practicing autorotation with a certified flight instructor (CFI).
Sequence of Events
The student completed the final phase of an autorotation, and the helicopter's skids were on the ground. At that point, the student abruptly pulled the collective pitch lever to the full up position. According to the CFI, the helicopter lifted off the ground, and then the student pulled the cyclic control full aft and to the right, freezing on the controls. The CFI reported that he overpowered the cyclic to level the helicopter and waited for the impact.
Damage
The main rotor blades, tail rotor assembly, tail boom, cross tubes, and skids were damaged. No other details were provided about injuries or additional damage.
