What happened
The aircraft was conducting a landing operation when it floated approximately one-third to one-half of the way down the runway before finally touching down. The pilot was unable to bring the aircraft to a stop within the remaining runway length. Consequently, the aircraft continued past the end of the paved surface and entered a ditch.
The investigation
A subsequent examination of the aircraft's braking system revealed two discrepancies that may have contributed to the inability to stop on the available runway. Environmental conditions at the time included an estimated temperature of 108 degrees Fahrenheit and a density altitude of approximately 4,500 feet. Additionally, the runway featured a slight downhill slope, which would have increased ground speed during the rollout.
Findings
The combination of a float during the landing phase, high temperature, elevated density altitude, and a sloping runway surface created challenging conditions for stopping distance. The discrepancies found in the brake system further reduced the aircraft's deceleration capability. These factors collectively resulted in the overrun of the runway end.
