Engine Failure
During the takeoff and initial climb, as the pilot retracted the landing gear, the turbocharger overboost warning light illuminated once. At the same time, the engine coughed and stopped producing power. The pilot noted that all engine gauges were indicating normal values until the engine quit. The aircraft was still over the runway when the failure occurred.
Emergency Landing
The pilot maintained an airspeed of 75 knots with one notch of flaps. The aircraft was landed with the landing gear retracted, resulting in a gear-up landing. The aircraft came to rest approximately 75 feet beyond the end of the paved runway surface.
Post-Incident Examination
Following the incident, the engine and turbocharger unit were examined. No mechanical malfunction or defect was found in either component.
Preflight and Weather Conditions
The aircraft had been tied down outdoors for four days. During that period, there were nightly thunderstorms in the area. The pilot performed a preflight inspection, which included draining the fuel tanks to check for water. No water was present in the fuel during that check.
