Event Overview
A flight instructor (CFI) was providing a private pilot with a familiarization flight. The accident occurred during an approach to Runway 23 at Basye, Virginia, at dusk. As the aircraft descended low on approach, the CFI instructed the pilot to add power. However, when the throttle was advanced, the engine reportedly did not respond.
Accident Sequence
The aircraft subsequently landed short of the runway, then rolled across a drainage levee. During this roll, the left landing gear collapsed. An examination of the engine revealed no evidence of pre-impact malfunction or failure.
Subsequent Power Loss Events
After the engine was repaired, it lost power during a takeoff. The emergency boost pump was turned on, and engine power was restored. The pilot returned for landing and turned the boost pump off on short final, at which point power was lost again. Power was restored when the boost pump was turned back on.
Resolution
The engine-driven fuel pump was replaced, and the aircraft was test-flown. The engine operated normally during the test flight. The fuel pump that had been removed was later bench tested and found to meet manufacturer's specifications.
