Sequence of Events
On the day before the accident, the aircraft made an emergency landing in a hay field after the engine lost power. Examination at that time revealed a defective fuel line, which was subsequently repaired. During a ground run-up after the repair, the engine produced full power and the magneto check was normal.
The following day, during takeoff, the engine lost power again at approximately 40 feet above ground level. The pilot reported that while in a left turn to avoid trees, control effectiveness was lost and he could not level the wings. The aircraft subsequently crashed and sustained substantial damage.
Examination Findings
An examination of the aircraft after the crash disclosed foreign material in the inlet elbow of the gas strainer. The pilot stated that the material was a ball of gummy rust. In a diagram depicting its location, he showed that it was next to a defective hose connection.
