Incident Details
At approximately 2235 hours, an approaching aircraft was heard near Bowman Field. The aircraft approached from the north, and an increase in engine power was noted as it passed over trees. Power was then reduced, followed by a sudden burst of power. Immediately after, sounds of tree contact were heard before a crash occurred.
A witness observed the aircraft descend into the fog and climb back out before the contact with trees.
Weather and Pilot Actions
The weather was clear of clouds with good visibility, wind calm, and ground fog present in patches approximately 5 to 15 feet above ground level (AGL).
Earlier, the pilot had called his wife and discussed the weather conditions, deciding on an alternate airport if the weather created problems. The pilot had flown into Bowman Field many times at night and was familiar with the field.
Airport Information
The airport guide remarks state: "No night operations except in an emergency." Additionally, it notes: "Rwy 02: tree, Rwy 20: tree." The beacon lights atop the hangar were observed to come on at 2230 hours.
