Accident Details
The aircraft was approaching its destination airport when the pilot was advised by Aurora local control that the only available landing area was an unlighted taxiway, designated Temporary Runway 9/27, which was used as a day VFR runway. The temporary runway was not authorized for use after sunset, and the pilot was informed that all airport lighting, with the exception of the rotating beacon, would be turned off. Additionally, the pilot was told that landing on the temporary runway would be at his own risk.
During the landing attempt, the aircraft touched down 490 feet short of and north of the taxiway. It then continued for about 325 feet paralleling the taxiway, crossed the north/south taxiway, and struck four taxi lights. The aircraft veered left and crossed the north/south runway, then crossed the southeast corner of the temporary runway. It continued over a gulley, at which point the left main landing gear separated.
Communication and NOTAM Information
The tower had issued a NOTAM dated September 2, 1983, effective September 6, 1983, advising of the construction and landing restrictions. To the best of the pilot's recollection, he did not ask the Flight Service Station for a NOTAM check during his preflight briefing, nor did the FSS advise the pilot of the NOTAM.
