Accident Summary
An aircraft collided with trees during an attempted go-around from a precautionary or forced landing. The pilot did not make any radio calls during the event.
Engine Examination
A subsequent teardown of the engine revealed internal problems. The magneto was broken, and the oil pan contained a large amount of metallic particles. Similarly, the main oil screen contained a large amount of metallic particles. While the engine was still operable, the rod bearings were lacking lubrication, and the general condition of the engine was not good.
Landing Attempt
During the landing attempt, the pilot overshot the field, touching down approximately 150 feet from large trees in front of the aircraft. The ground roll was short, about 45 feet, and approximately 105 feet later, the aircraft collided with a large tree at about 7 feet above ground level.
Toxicology
A toxicology report on the pilot indicated the presence of alcohol in the liver tissue fluid at a level of 0.147%.
