Flight Details
The pilot, accompanied by a safety pilot, departed Page Field at 1401 to perform airwork. One minute after departure, the control tower questioned the crew about why they had not started a turn southbound. The safety pilot responded, "I just pulled an engine on him and he is going to start his turn now." Later, the pilot inquired whether the area northwest of Naples was suitable for practicing airwork.
Witness Account
A witness observed a large splash in the water. Upon arriving at the location of the splash, the witness found an oil slick and parts of the aircraft.
Recovery and Damage
The aircraft was subsequently retrieved. The landing gear was found in the down position. There was extensive damage to the underside of the wings and fuselage.
