Incident Overview
On an unspecified date, a Cessna TU206F (registration N7320Z) and a Pitts Special S-1 (registration N20JK) collided while both were in the landing flare and touchdown phase for runway 24. The Cessna was executing a straight-in approach, while the Pitts had remained in the traffic pattern after a local flight to practice landings.
Pilot Statements
The pilot of the Cessna reported that he had advised other traffic of his position and intentions using the UNICOM frequency as he entered the straight-in approach. He stated that his aircraft was equipped with a spoiler modification and that he flew his final approach at 55 to 60 knots. He added that he saw the Pitts still on the downwind leg when he was on final approach.
The pilot of the Pitts stated that he flew a standard traffic pattern and turned onto final approach about 3/4 mile from the runway. He did not see the Cessna prior to the collision.
Collision Sequence
According to the reports, the two aircraft converged during the landing phase. The Pitts approached the Cessna from above and struck the right wing of the Cessna at the moment the Cessna was touching down on the runway.
Airman's Information Manual Recommendation
The Airman's Information Manual recommends that aircraft entering the traffic pattern should do so on the downwind leg, abeam the midpoint of the runway. This guideline is intended to improve situational awareness and reduce the risk of collisions in the pattern.
