What happened
Prior to departure, the captain reviewed available weather reports and was aware of current conditions, including significant meteorological advisements. He planned a route parallel to a frontal system to reach an area suitable for continuing to the destination. After takeoff, he kept the seat belt sign illuminated but did not instruct passengers to anticipate turbulence or restrict flight attendants to their seats, as he did not expect rough air.
While cruising at 17,000 feet mean sea level, the captain used onboard radar and air traffic control advisories to identify adverse weather. After maneuvering to avoid heavy precipitation, the aircraft encountered turbulence. At that moment, three flight attendants and one passenger were walking in the aisle. One passenger sustained serious injuries, while one flight attendant and six passengers received minor injuries.
The aircraft was flown back to Tampa, Florida, where it landed without further incident.
