Incident Overview
During takeoff, the pilot noticed that the throttle was sticking. An attempt was made to abort the takeoff, but the throttle continued to bind. As a result, the aircraft became airborne at a below-normal speed. The pilot was forced to land the aircraft, and subsequently, the aircraft impacted the ground and several trees.
Engineering Observations
An engineer stated that the throttle friction should have been noticeable to the pilot for some time prior to the accident. The friction likely accumulated over multiple flights.
Maintenance Context
A mechanic indicated that the throttle cable is supposed to be inspected during the annual inspection for 'freedom of movement.' The most recent annual inspection had been conducted approximately eight months before the accident.
Sequence of Events
The pilot's attempt to abort was hindered by the binding throttle. The aircraft departed at an abnormally low airspeed, which necessitated an immediate landing. During the landing, the aircraft collided with the ground and trees, causing damage.
