What happened
The aircraft suffered a complete loss of engine power while executing the initial climb immediately following takeoff. During this critical phase of flight, the pilot initiated a climbing turn in an effort to avoid nearby power lines and trees. However, the maneuver resulted in the aircraft entering a departure stall. The aircraft subsequently collided with the power lines and surrounding trees.
The investigation
Post-accident examination revealed that the aircraft was operating on automotive fuel rather than approved aviation-grade gasoline. An FAA inspector examined the ignition system and reported that the magneto switch was positioned to utilize only the left magneto, which may have contributed to the engine's inability to sustain power.
Findings
The primary factors leading to this accident included the use of automotive fuel, which is not approved for aircraft engines, and the resulting engine failure. The pilot's attempt to avoid obstacles during a low-altitude maneuver led to an aerodynamic stall from which recovery was not possible before impact.
