What happened
Immediately after takeoff, the engine began emitting smoke while simultaneously losing power. The pilot initiated a forced landing procedure, directing the aircraft toward a muddy, plowed field. Upon impact with the uneven terrain, the aircraft's nose section collapsed, causing the plane to nosed over.
The investigation
A compression check was performed on the engine to diagnose the mechanical failure. The inspection revealed that cylinder number five had zero compression. Mechanics removed the affected cylinder for closer examination and discovered a significant structural defect. The cylinder was found to be cracked approximately two-thirds of its way around the circumference, located 2-1/2 inches from the mounting base.
Findings
The primary mechanical failure was identified as a cracked cylinder on the engine. This structural integrity loss led directly to zero compression in the affected cylinder, which caused the sudden loss of power and subsequent smoke generation. The combination of these factors necessitated an emergency landing in unsuitable terrain, resulting in the nose-over damage.
