Incident Overview
A pilot reported that while descending from 3,500 feet mean sea level (MSL) to the traffic pattern altitude of 2,000 feet MSL, he switched the fuel selector from the left fuel tank to the right tank. Upon entering the traffic pattern, during the execution of prelanding checks, the pilot advanced the mixture control. At that point, the engine ceased operation.

Following the engine failure, the pilot performed a forced landing in a muddy field. During the landing, the landing gear collapsed.
Post-Accident Examination
An examination of the aircraft after the incident revealed that the left fuel tank was empty. The right fuel tank contained 12 gallons of fuel remaining.
