Accident Overview
An aircraft collided with a radio antenna support cable at approximately 171 feet above ground level during low-altitude maneuvering in snow showers. The incident occurred near the KDWB radio antenna, according to a policeman who observed the aircraft over a field in the vicinity.
Witness Accounts
One witness reported that the heaviest snow showers were concentrated in the area of the accident site. A policeman saw the aircraft flying over a field near the KDWB radio antenna.
Weather Information
The pilot had received a weather briefing 11 hours prior to the accident. The forecast for the planned afternoon return flight included lowering ceilings, turbulence, and icing. Relatives who observed the departure from Prairie du Chien at approximately 1600 hours CDT noted that it was raining at that time.
Pilot Communications
Later during the flight, the pilot announced over the radio that he was disoriented. When assistance was offered, he responded, "I sure could use it, yes." Approach control subsequently provided vectors and instructed the pilot to steer 260 degrees. When asked to report his altitude, the pilot did not respond.
Final Radar Contact
The last radar contact with the aircraft was in the vicinity of the accident site. No further communications were received.
