Sequence of Events
The pilot of a multi-engine airplane stated that he did not visually check the aircraft's fuel quantity before departure. Approximately ten minutes after takeoff, while the airplane was operating on auxiliary fuel tanks, the right engine lost power. The pilot selected the crossfeed function, and the engine restarted. He then turned off the right fuel valve. During a downwind entry for landing, both engines lost power. The pilot subsequently turned off the left fuel valve and both engine boost pumps. Attempts to glide to the airport were unsuccessful, and the airplane crash-landed off the airport.
Post-Accident Inspection
An inspection of the airplane after the accident revealed that the auxiliary fuel tanks were empty. However, the main fuel tanks each contained 14 gallons of fuel. The fuel selector valves and boost pump switches were found in the off position.
