Accident Overview
The flight departed downwind from an unimproved field. The pilot chose this direction to avoid power lines at the upwind end of the field.
Departure and Attempted Takeoff
During the takeoff roll, the aircraft could not attain sufficient speed to lift off and clear a fence at the departure end of the runway. The pilot attempted to pull the aircraft off the ground and climb over the fence.
Collision and Crash
As the aircraft attempted to clear the fence, the main landing gear struck the top wire of the fence. Subsequently, the left horizontal stabilizer and the right wing struck a fence post. Control was lost, and the aircraft crashed into the next field.
Pilot's Statement
The pilot stated that having departed this field many times before, he felt confident of his plans for the takeoff.
