An aircraft struck power lines after a go-around following a bounced landing. Witnesses reported multiple touchdowns and a final left bank before impact and fire.

Accident Sequence

According to witness statements, the aircraft approached with a nose-low attitude until just before touchdown, when it pitched up. The aircraft then bounced into the air and touched down on the nose gear. It rocked side to side on the runway and became airborne again. It traveled approximately 200 to 300 feet at an altitude of 20 to 30 feet above ground level before touching down a third time. Near the end of the runway, a go-around was initiated. During the go-around, the aircraft contacted power lines while in a left bank. After contacting the power lines, it struck the ground and erupted into flames.

Aircraft Condition

The pilot was flying the aircraft to Bloomsburg for maintenance after a small oil leak and low compression were noted. An investigation revealed lower compression in the number 6 cylinder than in the others. Measurement of the wing flap actuator extension corresponded to a 12-degree flap setting. The pilot/operator handbook calls for full flaps during short-field landings and for flaps to be retracted to 20 degrees during go-arounds until clear of obstacles.
